Casa Velò: energy retrofit of a 17th century building with radiant floors
A curious fact to begin with: this building is known as the Casa Velò (bike in French) because an air-raid shelter was discovered in the basement containing two bicycles that were connected to a dynamo. This system was used to generate energy and create ventilation, as it could accommodate up to 300 people in wartime.
This historic building located in Turin has had numerous uses.
It was originally the headquarters of a sports association, then the residence of a count, before being taken over by a wine-producer, later it was used a roasting plant, then a hotel, the headquarters of Italgas and before being converted into the residential complex of 84 Class A flats covering a total of 10,000 sqm we see today.
For the energy upgrading, a floor radiant heating and cooling system was chosen, managed by a Smartcomfort 365 control unit, optimised to limit system consumption while still ensuring maximum indoor comfort.
As you can see in the video, the site is at a fairly advanced stage: the screed covering the radiant system for load distribution has already been cast, the electrical system for the Smart temperature and humidity probes has been prepared, and the Deuclima ceiling-mounted machines have been installed. In fact, all the flats are equipped with 5-way Deuclima CMV units for dehumidification and hot/cold integration.
The machines are also equipped with aUV lamp to sanitise the air from viruses and bacteria.
The system is powered by agroundwater geothermal heat pump generator.
